Information for Tour Planners and Group Travel Organisers
The Vale of Rheidol Railway operates regular steam services from April through to the beginning of November, offering visitors the chance to experience one of Britain’s most scenic heritage railway journeys. With a journey time of around one hour from Aberystwyth to Devil’s Bridge, and a total round trip of approximately 3 hours, it is perfectly suited to coach tours and organised group travel.
The railway provides an ideal day out for a wide range of groups. Whether you are arranging a trip for a small club, society, or community organisation or you are a tour operator seeking memorable steam train excursions to include within a wider holiday programme, we can help create a flexible itinerary that works around your schedule and requirements.
Our team is experienced in supporting group visits and can assist with planning to ensure a smooth and enjoyable experience from arrival to departure.
Passengers are treated to an unforgettable journey through some of the most spectacular scenery in Wales. The line climbs steadily from the coast at Aberystwyth into the heart of the Cambrian Mountains, passing through dramatic valleys, wooded hillsides, and open countryside along the way.
A trip on the Vale of Rheidol Railway combines heritage, history, and natural beauty, delivering a memorable experience that keeps groups returning year after year.
Please refer to the Timetable page on our website for full operating dates and departure times. If no public services are running on your preferred date, it may still be possible to arrange a private charter train for your group. Please contact us directly to enquire.
Your journey can begin at either Aberystwyth or Devil’s Bridge stations, both of which offer free coach parking for your convenience. Groups can choose to travel one way or enjoy a full return journey, depending on your itinerary and preferences. Finding the railway is easy. Follow the brown tourism signs with train symbols.
At Aberystwyth, avoid signs for the mainline railway station as this is separate to us.
On arrival at Aberystwyth, coaches can use our dedicated car park in Park Avenue, SY23 1PG. Coaches can remain parked there after unloading and there is no charge to use this facility. There is additional parking nearby in the Ceredigion County Council operated Coach Park on Boulevard St Brieuc however a charge may apply.
On arrival at Devil’s Bridge, SY23 3JL, we recommend coaches reverse into the station yard where you can unload your passengers. Whilst a small charge applies for cars, there is no charge for coaches to park.
Arrival – We advise all parties to arrive no later than 15 minutes before train departure time. Organisers/couriers should collect their group ticket and wristbands before boarding the train and railway staff will direct passengers to the reserved seats. These will be indicated by a reservation board on the side of the carriage. The party must have made payment before the train departs or travel may be denied.
-
Both Aberystwyth and Devil’s Bridge stations have shops stocking a range of souvenirs, books and gifts including our popular postcards (and stamps), fridge magnets and tea towels. At Aberystwyth there is a trackside café serving a range of hot and cold drinks, snacks, homemade cakes and light lunches.
-
We have toilet facilities at both Aberystwyth and Devil’s Bridge stations however there are no on-board lavatories in our carriages.
-
The railway offers complimentary travel for coach drivers and tour managers/group leaders.
Coach drivers not travelling can also benefit from a free hot drink and snack in our Aberystwyth cafe.

We reserve the right to make changes to the timetable or locomotive roster subject to availability and operational requirements. During periods of high fire risk, a diesel locomotive may replace a steam locomotive. Our line controller will liaise with group organisers to ensure they are kept informed of any revision to services.
