More new exhibits arrive in Aberystwyth
The Vale of Rheidol Railway are pleased to announce the arrival of two vertical boiler locomotives for display in the museum at Aberystwyth.
‘Pendyffryn’ is a vertical boiler locomotive built by De Winton & Co of Caernarfon in 1897. It worked for the Pen-yr-Orsedd slate quarry in North Wales, before being saved for preservation in 1965. It received a new boiler at the Brecon Mountain Railway in 2012, and arrived in Aberystwyth in mid April 2024.
‘Redstone’ has a particularly unusual history: it was designed in 1903 by the owner of the Penmaenmawr granite quarry, for his children to use on a garden railway. It was built by Mr Redstone (the foreman fitter) as a 2′ gauge model of a 3′ gauge De Winton quarry locomotive. It was restored to operational condition at the Brecon Mountain Railway, and is now on display in the glass atrium of the museum in Aberystwyth.
Both locomotives are on display in the new museum at Aberystwyth station: entry is £5 adults/£3 children, or free with a train ticket.

Mae Rheilffordd Cwm Rheidol yn falch o gyhoeddi bod dau locomotif boiler fertigol wedi cyrraedd, i’w harddangos yn amgueddfa Aberystwyth.
Locomotif boiler fertigol yw ‘Pendyffryn’, a adeiladwyd gan De Winton & Co yng Nghaernarfon ym 1897. Bu’n gweithio i chwarel lechi Pen-yr-Orsedd yng Ngogledd Cymru, cyn cael ei phrynu ym 1965. Derbyniodd foiler newydd yn Rheilffordd Fynydd Aberhonddu yn 2012.
Mae gan ‘Redstone’ hanes arbennig o anarferol: fe’i cynlluniwyd ym 1903 gan berchennog chwarel ithfaen Penmaenmawr, i’w blant ei ddefnyddio ar reilffordd gardd. Fe’i hadeiladwyd gan Mr Redstone (y fforman ffitiwr) fel model 2-droedfedd o locomotif 3-troedfedd De Winton. Cafodd ei adfer i gyflwr gweithredol yn Rheilffordd Fynydd Aberhonddu, ac mae bellach ar arddangos yn atriwm gwydr yr amgueddfa yn Aberystwyth.
Pris mynediad yw £5 i oedolion/£3 i blant, neu am ddim gyda thocyn trên. Dewch i ymuno â ni!
